Pictured:Tavon Hubbard, Lance Corporal- USMC
Description:LCpl Tavon Hubbard was KIA in a helicopter crash in Iraq on Aug 11, 2004. He was 24 years old.

I knew Tavon. I was stationed with him at MCLB Barstow, CA from 2000-2002, then again in Okinawa, Japan from 2002-2003. He was a mail clerk both times, and was the roommate of one of my best friends in Barstow (Jason Jones). This is the first time I looked through the list of all of my fallen brothers and sisters, and I ran across him. I saw him regularly when we were together in Barstow, in fact we even went clubbing together a few times. It was in Japan that when I saw him that I really felt a connection with him. If you're stationed with someone in the service, it's easy to have a non-chalant friendship- you know that sooner or later you're going to both get shipped off to other places. It's when you get to a new duty station and see familiar faces that make this the regaled brotherhood the world has heard so much about. Seeing a familiar face halfway around the world made my day back then. I remember he had a cast on at the time for a leg injury (if he hadn't been on crutches he probably wouldn't have stood out since we all wear the same suit to work). We instantly got to talking and were both ecstatic to see someone we knew. I can't say we were best friends or anything, but I know a good person when I see one, and Tavon was a good person. There's no doubt in my mind he was a great father to his (currently) three-year-old daughter, and I deeply regret his inability to be there for her growing up. He was definitely too young to go, and I will proudly admit that I cried when I heard of his passing. I will miss the fact that I won't run into him again in the future.

God Bless you Hubbard, and all of your family as well.

Hollis, I sent LCpl Hubbard hom eto his family, so you know given the conditions he made it home to his family in the best care one could have had. I assure you his uniform was one of the sharpest I sent out...

I thought you might have seen him after they brought him home. I heard that Gov Schwarzenegger had them fly the CA flags at half mast for him and the CA SSgt that died in the helo crash that day as well.

Visited Tavon yesterday on the 1-yr anniversary... he's laid to rest with the SSgt he was in the helo with (they share a headstone). They were doing another burial nearby for someone in the AF and doing the gun salutes and everything. It really hits home when you're out there in Arlington cemetery. We miss you, man. You're not forgotten.
